Important Points About the Indian diet plan for cancer patients 

1. Start your day with green juice – juicing gets 90% of nutrients when absorbed and is 3x better than eating.

2. Basic ingredients are 1 carrot / 1 green apple, 5 cups (approx. half bundle) of celery/ coriander leaves, 1 beet or 1 cucumber, and ginger root/ 1 tsp. chia seeds.

3. Wash the leafy greens and the other ingredients very well.

4. Cut the apple into pieces and remove the seeds for the apple.

5. Combine all ingredients in a blender or a juice maker and blend on low speed until you get a green mix.

Nutritional infoBeets/ cucumber–rich in anti-oxidants, has carotenoids, lycopene, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Folate, Manganese, and Potassium.

Prepare Dosa with half a cup of Grated Radish

2 tablespoons of coconut chutney with 2-3 garlic pods.

Eat  2 or 3 dosas

Broken wheat khichdi- 1.5 cup

Prepare it with spinach or kale (half a cup)


✅ Mid snacks

Vegetable Soup -1 Cup

Prepare with tomato/mushroom/carrot and add black pepper.

                                    OR

Green gram Soup -1 Cup

Prepare it with 1 tsp sunflower/ pumpkin seeds.


✅Lunch

2 Multigrain roti (mixed cereals ragi + wheat/bajra + jowar)

1/2 cup vegetable sambar.

1 bowl of organic rice

                                       OR

2 whole grain wheat roti

1/2 cup of cauliflower and mushroom curry

1/2 cup curd or buttermilk


✅Evening snacks

Fruits -1 cup

Vitamin C-rich citrus fruits-orange, Sweet lime, grapefruit, lemon, berries-strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, cherries, papaya, pineapple, avocado, guava.

                                         OR

4-5 each soaked dry fruits (raisins, almonds, walnuts)

1 cup green tea with a few lemon drops.

(A gap of 30 minutes is to be kept between green tea and fruits/ dry fruits)


✅ Dinner

1 or 2 cups semi-polished brown rice or quinoa

1/2 cup broccoli curry 

Paneer stuffed moong dal chilla-2 with grounded flaxseeds and cumin chutney.

Raw vegetables should not be given to cancer patients as they are not digested quickly, and it is better not to eat foods that cause diarrhoea because treatment given to cancer patients often causes diarrhoea and indigestion.


Soups for cancer patients 

Note: On a day, serve healthy soups to cancer patients, and these soups can prevent cancer. Some of the soups are.

1. Carrot + Beetroot Soup

2. Vegetable soup

3. Lemon + Ginger  soup

4. Mushroom soup

5. Tomato soup with vegetables

The nutrients you’ll receive from eating the nutritional anti-cancerous foods act as powerful antioxidants that inhibit and repair damage from carcinogenic activity.

 

1. Cruciferous family veggies(broccoli, radish, cauliflower, cabbage) are rich in nutrients and anti-inflammatories like broccoli sprouts seed!! – Sulforaphane is found in vegetables such as broccoli in particularly high concentrations.

Cruciferous vegetables are rich in nutrients, including several beta-carotenefiber, lutein, and zeaxanthin); vitamins C, E, and K; folate; and minerals.  

 

2. Apigenin foods like apple, and cherry-It is high in antioxidants and vitamin C, basil, and chamomile tea mixed with boiled lemon grass.

3. Turmeric (yellow gold): Turmeric contains a compound called Curcumin. It lowers inflammation and oxidative stress and inhibits cancer cells.

4. Green tea. While green tea is relatively more potent, you can also find a reasonable amount of EGCG in white tea and oolong tea.

Other sources, such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, kiwi, and avocados, also contain small amounts of EGCG.

5. Green leafy veggies like spinach and kale –Quercetin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that might help kill cancer cells.

Spinach has a well-deserved reputation as a nutritional powerhouse. Major contributors of luteolin to the diet are carrots, Celery, chilli peppers, sweet pepper, lettuce, and spinach.

6. Beans & mushrooms – Glucan, selenium, vitamin D2, bioactive peptides, and glutathione. Each nutrient has specialised functions; these superfoods have been linked to cancer reduction.

7. Curd/buttermilk/ rice kanjiSupport healthy gut bacteria by consuming fermented high-quality probiotics daily.

The gut interacts closely with the immune system, and healthy microflora conditions exhibit anticancer activity.

Vitamins boostfruits like pomegranate, pineapple, berries, and papaya are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which help to prevent cancer

9. Nuts & seeds like almonds, pistachios, Brazil nuts, cashews, sunflower/flaxseed seeds. – Selenium treatment is an alternative method in the fight against cancer.

Brazil nuts or walnut nuts are the best food source of selenium, with around 50-75 mcg of selenium per nut.

A small handful (max 4-5 nuts) will supplement the selenium you need for the entire day. Other excellent sources include pasture-raised eggs and omega-3  fatty fish.

10. Spices and Herbs Garlic contains powerful antioxidants like allicin, proven to remove free radicals from your body.

Ursolic acid is also present in food, such as apple peel, cranberry juice, cumin, holy basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, and other herbs. 

Rosemary and sage have the highest content of ursolic acid, 3.0% and 1.8%, respectively.
 

Important Tips For Cancer Patients 

1. Sugar is a cancer feeder. Sugar sources are an important food supply to cancer cells. Note: Sugar replacements made with Aspartame are harmful.

2. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or jaggery, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added and processed food. A better alternative is a pinch of rock or sea salt.

3. However, ensure sunlight exposure for some time as vitamin D is essential, and sunlight is the best source one can have to support your immune system.

4. Stay in a hygienic environment 

5. Stay stress-free in your life. Stress can cause inflammation and oxidative tissue damage and reduce immunity.

Practice stress reduction techniques, including regular exercise and meditation practices.

Drink enough water, approximately. 2-3 liter, all body cells need enough water to function. If you don’t take in enough fluids or if you lose fluids through vomiting or diarrhoea, you can become dehydrated (your body doesn’t have as much fluid as it should)

6. Sleep well and avoid packed, refined, processed foods that increase inflammation and promote cancer cell growth. 

7. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), meditation can help a lot of cancer patients. Cancer patients can practice meditation to overcome pain and anxiety, for good sleep, and meditation is useful to overcome stress.

  12. Using a wide container ensures quick freezing. 
  13. Cover the container and refrigerate it until it is half frozen, or for about 4 hours.
  14. Take out the container and cut the frozen mango ice cream into pieces.
  15. Add the pieces to the blender and blend until they become a smooth liquid.
  16. This is an important step in ice cream making, as it breaks the ice crystals that are formed in the initial stages of freezing.
  17. Pour the ice cream mixture back into the container.
  18. Make sure that you cover it this time tightly with plastic wrap in such a way that the plastic touches the surface of the ice cream.
  19. It helps to prevent the formation of ice crystals on the top of the ice cream.
  20. Freeze until the ice cream has set completely.
  21. Scoop into a bowl and serve with freshly cut slices of mango.

  • 4 red chili (medium dry)
  • 15-20 Curry leaves
  • 1 carrot (finely chopped)
  • 100 beans
  • 1 cup Tamarind (pulp)
  • 1 tbsp Chana Dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 1 tbsp Urad Dal (split Black gram)
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 4-5 Green Chilies
  • 1 ½ tsp ginger (finely chopped)
  • ¼ tsp Asafetida (Hing)
  • 1 ½ tbsp Sesame seed powder
  • 2 tbsp peanuts
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste
Method for Pulihora with Tamarind 
  • First, soak the tamarind in 2 cups of hot water for a few minutes.
  • Take this in a food processor and process it a few times until it becomes a thick paste.
  • Strain the tamarind paste mixture to discard any lumps and transfer the thick paste to a bowl.
  • The consistency of tamarind paste should be neither too thick nor too watery.
  • Meanwhile, sprinkle turmeric powder, salt, a tbsp of oil, and a few curry leaves on the cooked rice.
  • Next, chop the carrots and beans and boil them till they’re half-cooked.
  • Once the vegetables are cooked, keep them aside.
  • In a cooking vessel, heat the remaining oil.
  • Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Now add dry chillies, cumin seeds, chana dal, and urad dal and saute for a minute till they turn light brown.
  • Add the slit green chillies, asafetida, ginger, cooked vegetables, and a few curry leaves and saute for a few seconds.
  • Now add the tamarind paste and cook until the raw smell of tamarind disappears.
  • It’s time to remove it from the heat when it turns a little thick.
  • Add the cooked tamarind mixture and salt and combine well, such that it’s spread all over the rice.
  • At last, sprinkle the roasted sesame seed powder and roasted peanuts and mix well.
  • Serve hot with pickle or vinegar chutney made out of chopped onion, salt, green chillies, and vinegar.

Ragi mudde, the South Indian powerhouse, doesn’t have to be time-consuming. Here’s a simplified version of the recipe that gets you delicious mudde balls in no time:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup ragi flour (finger millet flour)
  • 1 ¾ cups boiling water (adjust based on flour quality)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ghee (clarified butter) (optional)exclamation

  • Stove
  • Bowl (big enough to hold all ingredients)

What is Kodo Millet?

Kodo millet is botanically also termed as Paspalum scrobiculatum. It prominently is cultivated in India, Vietnam, Nepal, West Africa, Indonesia and the Philippines, countries that have large patches of dry areas.

Since Kodo millet is a drought-tolerant plant these countries extensively cultivate it.

The grass of this millet grows up to four feet in height and has slender leaves of around 20 to 40 cm in length. These plants require very little amount of water.

The ellipsoidal-shaped seeds of Kodo millet are very tiny, around 1.5 mm in width, and 2 mm in length with colour varying from dark grey to light brown.

How to cook Kodo millet?

It is a bit difficult to cook Kodo millet. Unlike polished rice, it takes time and more water to cook this type of millet so that you get the right, smooth consistency.

First, wash Kodo millet with water and then soak it for 2 hours.

Boil 4 cups of water and then add 1 cup of drained Kodo millet. Simmer it on medium heat for some time until you get the right grainy texture.

 

Kodo millet recipes

1. Kodo millet pulao

Ingredients:

1 cup Kodo millet

2 cups chopped vegetables like carrot, potato, beans, onion, green capsicum, mint leaves, ginger, green chillies (as per taste), garlic cloves and coriander leaves

For tadka: 2 cloves, 1 bay leaf, cumin, garam masala, turmeric (half tsp each), oil as required, and salt to taste

Method:

Soak Kodo millet in water for 2 hours.

Grind it in a mixer along with mint, garlic, chillies, cloves, coriander and ginger. Add a little bit of water if necessary.

In a pan, add oil as needed and saute the chopped onion until pink. Add cumin, bay leaf, chopped vegetables, turmeric, garam masala, salt and stir.

Add the ground masala paste and fry till the masala starts leaving the sides.

Add water and let it boil.

Add soaked Kodo millet and cook until it turns into a grainy texture.

 

2. Kodo milled Dosa

Ingredients:

1 cup Kodo millet

1 tsp fenugreek seeds

One-fourth cup of whole urad dal

2 tablespoons beaten rice or poha

Salt according to taste

Method:

Wash urad dal and Kodo millet and soak in water with poha and fenugreek seeds for 6 hours.

Grind by adding water as required to make a smooth paste

Add salt to this smooth paste and let it ferment overnight in a container.

Next morning make hot dosas by spreading a large spoonful of batter on hot tawa greased with oil.

Serve it with chutney.

3. Kodo millet Kheer

Ingredients:

Dairy milk or coconut/almond milk

Half cup dehusked Kodo millet

Sugar or sweeteners like stevia, coconut sugar, etc.

1 small tsp cardamom powder

Chopped dry fruits as per choice

Method:

Rinse Kodo millet in water and soak it for 30 minutes in warm water.

In a heavy-bottomed pan pour the milk and simmer it on low flame until it starts thickening.

Drain the Kodo millet and add it to the boiling milk.

Cook the millet completely and then add cardamom powder, sugar, or sweetener of your choice.

Garnish with chopped dry fruits just before serving.


Who should not eat Kodo millet?

People who suffer from hypothyroidism should not eat Kodo millet.

Also, if consumed in excess, it can lead to digestive issues like constipation and bloating.

Those who are already suffering from digestive problems should introduce Kodo millet in their diet only after consulting their health consultant.
